A Love Letter

My Love,

I am watching you sleep right now, the quiet rhythm of your breath a steady anchor in the room, and my heart is aching with a love so fierce it hurts. It hurts because I know how hard-won this quiet is for you. I know what it cost you to get here.

I need to tell you something today, and I need you to really hear it.

You grew up in a house of smoke and mirrors. You were raised in an environment that draped itself in the costume of normalcy, where the clink of ice in a glass was the house’s heartbeat, where the uncorking of a bottle was the signal that it was finally okay to relax, to laugh, to feel. You were taught, before you were even old enough to understand the lesson, that the edge of a glass is where comfort begins. You were handed a map where "normal" was drawn in the blurry, slurring lines of a substance, and you were told that was true north.

I know the disorientation you feel now. I know the vertigo that comes from realizing the ground you grew up on wasn’t solid earth, but just a stage set held up by habit and haze. When you finally stepped out of that illusion—when you chose clarity over the comfort of the familiar—you didn’t just leave a substance behind. You left an entire cosmology. You lost the only definition of "normal" you ever knew.

I watch you sometimes, at a dinner party or a holiday table, your eyes tracking the pours, the toasts, the shifts in people's voices. I see the way you hold your breath, the way you hold your sparkling water like a shield. I see the subtle grief that crosses your face. It is the grief of the outsider looking in at a club you were once a member of, but also the grief of a child realizing their childhood was a magic trick.

I need you to know: you are not the broken one for finding this hard. The world you came from was the broken thing.

It is not your fault that your baseline for love, for celebration, for grief, and for Tuesday evenings was tangled up in a substance. You were just a kid, absorbing the air you breathed. You learned to navigate the unpredictable waters of other people's intoxication because it was the only way to survive. You became an expert at reading the room, at assessing the emotional weather based on how many empties were in the trash. That is a brilliant, terrible superpower, and I am so sorry you had to learn it.

But oh, my love, look at what you’ve built since you walked out of the illusion.

Look at this life we have made. Look at the evenings that end with clear memories. Look at the arguments we have that don't escalate into chaos, but resolve with soft apologies. Look at the mornings where you wake up without the shadow of shame, without the frantic retracing of steps. Look at the way you are learning to sit with your feelings—the boring ones, the scary ones, the joyful ones—without needing to numb the edges.

You are rewriting a generational script with your bare hands. You are taking the wrecking ball to that house of mirrors, and you are choosing to stand in the stark, beautiful, sometimes terrifying light of reality.

I know it feels lonely sometimes. I know there is a phantom ache for the people who still live behind the glass, the ones who still believe the illusion is real. I know you miss the fantasy of it, even as you reject the reality of it. But you are not alone. You have me.

I am here to be your new normal.

I promise to be the safe harbor where you don't have to perform. I promise that our joy will never require a chemical chaser, and our sorrow will never need to be drowned. I promise to hold your hand when the ghosts of that old life come rattling their glasses, and I promise to remind you of the miracle of your own un-numbed heart.

You are the bravest person I know. You didn't just inherit the world you were given; you looked at it, saw the illusion for what it was, and chose the painful, exquisite truth instead.

I love you. Not in spite of the broken foundation you came from, but because of the magnificent, clear-eyed life you are building on top of it.

Forever yours,

The real world you healed through sobriety
