Diet Beats Your Genes: What a 103,000-Person Study Says About Life Expectancy


There is a comforting excuse many of us reach for when talking about health: "It's genetic, there's not much I can do." A large new study, published in Science Advances and drawing on over 103,000 UK Biobank participants, pushes back on that excuse in a fairly direct way. The researchers, led by Yanling Lv and colleagues, set out to answer a specific question: does eating well actually extend how long you live, and does that benefit hold up even if your genes predispose you toward a shorter life?

The short answer is yes, on both counts.

The study, in plain terms

The researchers followed 103,649 adults in the UK Biobank for a median of just over ten years, during which 4,314 participants died. Rather than looking at a single diet, they examined five well-established dietary patterns:

  • Alternate Healthy Eating Index-2010 (AHEI), a general measure of diet quality

  • Alternate Mediterranean Diet (AMED), the classic olive oil, fish, vegetables, and whole grains pattern

  • Healthful Plant-Based Diet Index (hPDI), which scores diets favoring healthy plant foods over animal products or unhealthy plant foods like refined carbohydrates

  • Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH), originally developed to lower blood pressure

  • Diabetes Risk Reduction Diet (DRRD), designed around foods associated with lower diabetes risk

For each pattern, participants were scored and grouped from lowest to highest adherence, then tracked for mortality outcomes.

The core finding: years, not just risk reduction

All five dietary patterns were associated with lower all-cause mortality and, more tangibly, with a longer life expectancy. People in the top quintile of dietary scores, meaning those eating in closest alignment with a given healthy pattern, gained meaningfully more years of life compared to those in the bottom quintile.

Specifically, at age 45:

  • Men gained an estimated 1.9 to 3.0 additional years of life depending on which dietary pattern was followed most closely

  • Women gained an estimated 1.5 to 2.3 additional years

Interestingly, the diet that produced the biggest gain was not the same for both sexes. The Diabetes Risk Reduction Diet showed the strongest association with extended life expectancy in men, while the Alternate Mediterranean Diet showed the strongest association in women. This is a useful reminder that "best diet" is not necessarily a one-size-fits-all answer, and that different dietary strategies may interact with different underlying risk profiles.

The genetics question: does diet still matter if you drew a short straw?

This is arguably the most important part of the study. The researchers specifically tested whether these dietary benefits held up after accounting for genetic susceptibility to shorter lifespan, essentially asking: if someone's genes predispose them toward earlier mortality, does eating well still help?


The associations remained significant even after adjusting for genetic risk. In the study's own framing, healthy dietary patterns were linked to longer life expectancy regardless of longevity genes.

This does not mean genetics are irrelevant to lifespan, they clearly play some role. But it does mean that diet is not simply a smaller factor riding on top of a genetically predetermined outcome. It appears to function as an independent lever, one that people carrying less favorable longevity genetics can still pull with real effect.

Why this matters more than another "eat healthy" headline

It is easy to skim past a finding like "healthy eating extends life" because it sounds obvious. What makes this study notable is the specificity and the scale. This is not a small trial or an animal model. It is a decade of tracked outcomes across a six-figure sample size, quantifying the benefit in actual years of life, and stress-testing that benefit against genetic risk, one of the most common reasons people assume their health trajectory is fixed.

It is also worth naming the honest limits of this kind of research. This is an observational cohort study, not a randomized controlled trial, so it shows strong association rather than definitive proof of direct cause and effect for every individual. Diet quality also tends to correlate with other health-supporting behaviors, income, exercise, healthcare access, that can be difficult to fully separate out statistically, even with careful adjustment. That said, the consistency across five different, independently validated dietary patterns, and the persistence of the effect after genetic adjustment, makes this one of the more robust findings in this space.

What to actually take from this

You do not need to adopt all five diets or chase the exact "best" one for your sex and situation. The deeper, more useful message is that these five patterns, despite their different origins and specific rules, converge on a similar underlying structure: an emphasis on vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, healthy fats, and a reduction in ultra-processed foods and added sugar.

If there is a single practical takeaway, it might be this: consistency with any one of these well-studied patterns, sustained over years, appears to matter more than finding the theoretically perfect diet. And crucially, that consistency appears to pay off in real years of life, even for people who did not win the genetic lottery for longevity.
