Where Autism Care Needs to Improve

Across regions, several gaps consistently appear:

Earlier and more accurate diagnosis - Many countries lack trained clinicians, leading to late or missed diagnoses. This is especially true in low‑resource settings.

Affordable, accessible therapies - Even in wealthy countries, therapy costs can be prohibitive without insurance coverage. In low‑income regions, services may not exist at all.

Education system readiness - Schools often lack training, staffing, or inclusive policies to support autistic students effectively.

Adult services - Globally, support drops sharply after childhood. Employment programs, independent living support, and mental health services for autistic adults are limited almost everywhere.

Public awareness and stigma reduction - Misconceptions about autism remain widespread, particularly in regions with limited research or cultural stigma.

Better global data - Many countries lack reliable prevalence data, making it difficult to plan services or allocate resources. Research gaps are especially large in Africa and parts of Asia .

What this means for the future

The global burden of autism continues to grow, and countries are at very different stages of building effective support systems. High‑income countries show that comprehensive care is possible, but even they face challenges with cost, equity, and adult services. Low‑income countries need investment in training, awareness, and basic infrastructure to ensure autistic people are not left behind. We’re building something together with the people who understand autism best - those living it every day. If you’re a parent, an autistic person, a caregiver, a teacher, a therapist, or part of an organisation supporting neurodivergent individuals, we would love to hear your story. What challenges do you face? What support do you wish existed? Where could an app make your life easier, calmer, or more connected?

Your experience can directly shape what we build next. Write to us anytime at hello@thesamsararetreats.com, and let’s create something truly helpful, together.
