Autism Care Differs Between Countries

Different countries take very different approaches, shaped by their healthcare systems, cultural attitudes, and resources.

Countries with strong support systems

These countries typically score high on healthcare access, education support, government policy, family services, and social inclusion:

United States - Strong early intervention programs, mandated insurance coverage in many states, and widespread availability of therapies. Challenges include cost, regional disparities, and long waitlists.

Sweden, Canada, Australia - Universal healthcare systems reduce financial barriers. Schools often provide structured support, and social inclusion policies are strong.

Japan and Singapore - High diagnostic rates and growing investment in services, though cultural stigma can still be a barrier in some communities.

These countries tend to rank high in comparative evaluations of autism support systems, which assess healthcare accessibility, diagnostic wait times, education, and social inclusion .

Countries with developing or limited support

Many African nations - Limited diagnostic capacity, few specialists, and low public awareness. Autism is often recognized only in severe cases, and services are scarce even after diagnosis .

Low‑income Asian and Latin American countries - Families often rely on private providers or NGOs. Public schools may lack training or resources to support autistic students.

Eastern Europe - Progress varies widely. Some countries have strong early intervention programs, while others still rely on outdated institutional models or lack community‑based services.

We’re building something together with the people who understand autism best - those living it every day. If you’re a parent, an autistic person, a caregiver, a teacher, a therapist, or part of an organisation supporting neurodivergent individuals, we would love to hear your story. What challenges do you face? What support do you wish existed? Where could an app make your life easier, calmer, or more connected?

Your experience can directly shape what we build next. Write to us anytime at hello@thesamsararetreats.com, and let’s create something truly helpful, together.
