Before the numbers

I want to tell you about a study that changed how I think about wellbeing, not as a nice-to-have, but as biology.

For a long time, the wellness world has said things like "stress ages you" as a kind of poetic shorthand. Comforting, maybe true, but not exactly proven. In 2022, a team of researchers, including longevity scientist Alex Zhavoronkov, set out to actually measure it. Not with a survey. With blood.

They built an AI that reads your biological age from a blood panel, then asked: does how you feel show up there too?

It did. And the size of the effect surprised even the researchers.

The study

What they actually did

Published in the peer-reviewed journal Aging, this research is unusually direct about a question most aging science avoids: not just what your body is doing, but what your mind is doing to it.

Method, in plain terms

An AI was trained to guess your age from your blood. Then it was asked who it was wrong about, and why.

Researchers used a deep learning model to predict biological age from 16 blood markers and basic biometrics in nearly 12,000 Chinese adults over 45, drawn from a major national health study. The model's guesses were accurate to within about 5.7 years on average. That accuracy is what made the next step possible.

The team then asked a harder question. When the model's guess was wrong, when it thought someone was older or younger than they really were, what explained the gap? They tested physical conditions first. People with a history of stroke, liver disease, or lung disease were reliably predicted as older than their true age, which confirmed the model was tracking something real about health.

Then they tested psychology. Eight simple measures: feeling bothered, lacking focus, feeling depressed, feeling hopeless, feeling fearful, restless sleep, feeling unhappy, feeling lonely. Each one, on its own, nudged the model's estimate of biological age. Combined, at their worst, they added up to something substantial.

The headline number

1.65 years. The same order of magnitude as smoking.

When researchers added up the effect of low psychological wellbeing across all eight measures, the toll on biological age was close to the toll of a habit we have spent decades warning people about.

Why this isn't just correlation


The biology underneath the feeling

This is the part that moved it, for me, from interesting to important. There is a known, physical pathway from how you feel to how your cells age.

Pathway one

Stress hormones

Chronic stress keeps glucocorticoid hormones elevated. These hormones are involved in memory and cognition, but sustained exposure leaves epigenetic marks, chemical changes to how your genes are read, that overlap with the same sites linked to vascular aging.

Pathway two

Telomere shortening

Telomeres are the protective caps on your chromosomes, and they shorten naturally with age. Research on lifetime accumulated stress has linked it to telomere shortening equivalent to as much as ten extra years of biological age.


Pathway three

Oxidative damage

Sustained psychological stress increases oxidative stress in the body, a slow accumulation of cellular damage that is one of the well-established drivers of aging at the molecular level.

Pathway four

Sleep disruption

In this study, restless sleep alone added nearly half a year to predicted biological age, one of the single largest psychological contributors measured. Poor sleep and poor mental health tend to travel together, each making the other worse.

What mattered most

Not every factor weighed the same

The researchers broke down the individual contribution of each factor. A few patterns stand out, including one that may surprise you.

An honest take, because the study itself raises it

Loneliness, on its own, did not reach statistical significance in this particular model. The researchers' interpretation was not that loneliness doesn't matter, but that deep, sustained support (a spouse, family) seems to carry more measurable weight than looser social ties. This is one study, in one population, using a self-reported weekly survey, which likely understates the true effect. The researchers themselves note that more thorough psychological assessments would probably find a larger impact. Correlation in a cross-sectional study also cannot fully prove which direction the arrow points, whether poor wellbeing ages the body, or early physical decline worsens mood, or both feed each other. The honest reading is that this is strong, biologically plausible evidence, not absolute proof.

What this actually means for you

Mental health is not the soft part of longevity. It is the foundation.

Treat your sleep like a medical priority

It carried the single largest psychological weight in this study. Protecting it is not indulgent. It is one of the more evidence-backed things you can do for your biological age.

Take your support system seriously

The data points to depth over breadth. A few people who truly know you may matter more for your biology than a wide circle of acquaintances.

Don't dismiss low mood as just emotional

If you've been feeling low, anxious, or hopeless for a stretch of time, this research is one more reason to treat it as a health matter, not a character one, and to talk to someone.

Let rest be a longevity practice, not a reward

Whatever calms your nervous system, real rest, real connection, real stillness, is doing measurable work on your cells while it's doing emotional work on you.

Your feelings are not separate from your biology. They are a chapter of it.
